DASH 037 - Pack Light

Matthew 4:20 (NIV)

The Bible Says... “At once they left their nets and followed Him”.

Just A Dash

When packing for a road trip where we’re going to be driving, boy we’ll pack the car down! We’ll grab an extra pillow, blanket, pair of shoes, travel mug, laptop bag, or cooler...”just in case”. The way I see it, “we have the room for it, so why not!” After all, “it’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it”, right?

If you’re a frequent flyer, then you know one of the worst feelings at the airport is the thought of having to leave something behind that can’t make the trip. That’s why we take precautions to pack light:

  • Funneling shampoo, conditioner, and lotions into smaller, travel-sized bottles

  • Deciding which makeup is absolutely essential so you aren’t lugging your entire makeup collection

  • Coordinating all of your outfits ahead of time to minimize the number of shoes and garments you’re traveling with

  • Looking up internet packing hacks to maximize your luggage space

Anytime cargo is being transported and the load is too heavy, something has to come off and be left behind. For ships and airplanes, this means limiting any unnecessary baggage before the trip even starts.

Physically, this might look like losing some weight before a wedding, class reunion, or summer vacation.

Spiritually, this means casting off everything from old habits, old friends, or even your old life entirely.

In each of these cases, there’s just too much heavy baggage that can’t make the trip, so you have to lighten the load.

A Pinch More

When you’re in control of a trip, there’s rarely any added cost or consequence for your extra baggage. But if you’re going to fly, and someone else is in charge of the flight plan, we’re compelled to pack light. Why?

Because most of us don’t want to pay the cost to bring our extra baggage along.

However, when Christ is leading our journey, whether physical or spiritual, He requires that we pack light. When Christ called his first disciples, it was required that they leave something behind in order to follow Him. If we’re ever going to travel freely with Christ, there are some things we have to leave behind that will slow us down or prevent us from getting where we need to go.

Airlines take certain measures to ensure that planes aren’t too heavy to take off from the runway, including placing a cap on the number of bags a passenger is able to travel with, and ensuring that all cargo meets strict weight and size criteria.

Likewise, if we are to follow Christ and be able to stay in step, then we have to pack light! If you’re carrying around any unnecessary baggage that’s keeping you from taking off, ask God to lighten your load. Then, commit to packing light so that you’re always travel-ready when Jesus calls!

Q: Are you carrying too much baggage to take off?

Q: What baggage is weighing you down physically? Spiritually?

Q: Have you ever “missed your flight” because you were too busy trying to gather your baggage?

Q: What can you do to ensure that you’re always ready when God calls and it’s time to travel?
