Matthew 5:13 NIV
The Bible Says... You are the salt of the Earth. But if the salt loses it saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
Just a Dash
I’m a decent cook, and salt is one of my staple seasonings. I’m sure that’s true for many of you, whether you’re a culinary pro or just a beginning chef. But have you ever held on to salt so long it lost its flavor?
As many times as I’ve read this scripture, I’ve never really considered just how long it would take for salt to lose its saltiness! In order for this to happen, the salt would have to be forgotten and unused for quite some time.
The same is true of our Faith. God has given each of us our own dash of flavor to sprinkle on the Earth, but, as the old saying goes, if we don’t use it, we lose it! Just as salt loses its saltiness and is no longer useful, if we aren’t sprinkling our faith on the world to reach others, we’re no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out.
In this scripture, Christ gives us an identity and a purpose – You are the Salt of the Earth. As salt, we are to add some flavor to the world around us. In order to serve our purpose, we have to allow ourselves to be used by the Master Chef – God. If the Salt of the Earth is not being used, we risk losing our flavor, making us useless in the Kitchen Kingdom of God.
A Pinch More
Ask God how you can be used by Him to add a little flavor to the world this week.
