Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
The Bible Says... “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Note: I chose to quote today’s Dash of Salt scripture from the KJV because that’s the translation I learned it in from my AWANA days. In addition to memorizing this scripture, we were also taught the definition of grace:
God giving me a free gift I don’t deserve
Just a Dash
This weekend, I received a number of blessings from my parents. It wasn’t my birthday or any particular occasion. In fact, the message was simply that they had “sent a small blessing”. Their blessings were especially significant to me, because I already owed them a significant debt. However, they did not withhold their blessings from me or suggest that I use this blessing to try and pay toward my debt to them. In spite of me being undeserving of more when I already owed so much, I was still given the same unconditional gift as if I had no prior debts. And guess what:
The grace of God is just even more sufficient than that!
Just as I was undeserving of their gracious gifts, we are all undeserving of salvation, God’s greatest gift, because of our sin debt to Him. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for our salvation by His death on the cross. The payment for our sins was one that we would never be able to repay. However, because of God’s amazing grace, He freely gifted us salvation through our faith in Jesus Christ.
A Pinch More
Q: When was the last time you received an unexpected gift that you didn’t deserve?
Q: When was the last time you extended grace to someone who didn’t deserve it?
This week, consider how you might extend grace to others with no regard for how they might repay you (after all, grace is free). I’ve added a few tips on how to show grace to others below:
Forgive someone who has wronged you that you hadn’t intended on forgiving
Be there for someone who hasn’t always been there for you
Show gratitude to others who haven’t shown their gratitude for you
I didn’t say this would be easy, but it will be worth it.
